The identification of hazards before they cause an accident is central to all accident prevention activities.   However, hazard identification is not an exact science but a subjective activity where the measure of the hazard will vary from person to person depending on the experience, attitude to risk.  By employing a range of hazard identification techniques the number of hazards can be reduced.

Some of the hazard identification methods used by Bee Safe are: -

Safety surveys

A general inspection of a whole work area.    Tend to be less detailed, however, give a good overall picture across a particular work area.

Safety sampling

Looks at one particular aspect of safety in more detail at a time (such as conveyor guarding).

Safety audits

A detailed work place inspection that seeks to identify all types of hazards.   Subsequent audits can identify improving or deteriorating conditions.

Near miss reporting

Encouraging employees to identify and report potential hazards that in a different circumstance may cause an accident.
